Background: One of the new provisions added to the 2009 RAA requires ICANN to develop, in consultation with registrars, a web page that outlines the rights and responsibilities of registrants. This publication is based on initial recommendations from the joint GNSO Council and At-Large Advisory Working Group and subsequent consultations with registrars; it provides a simple and straightforward general statement of the rights and obligations of registrants as they appear under the 2009 RAA.

Domain name holders’ rights:

1. Your domain name registration and any privacy / proxy services you may use in conjunction with it must be governed by a registration agreement with an ICANN accredited registrar.

  • You have the right to review this Registration Agreement and download a copy of your records at any time.

2. You have the right to accurate and accessible information about:

  • The identity of your ICANN accredited registrar;
  • The identity of any proxy or privacy service provider associated with your Registrar;
  • Your registrar’s terms and conditions, including pricing information applicable to your domain name registration;
  • Terms and conditions, including pricing information, applicable to any privacy services offered by your Registrar;
  • Customer support services offered by your Registrar and your privacy service provider and how you can access them;
  • How to raise questions and resolve disputes with your Registrar and any privacy services offered by them;
  • Instructions that explain the processes for registering your registrar, managing, transferring, renewing, and restoring your domain name registrations, including through any proxy servers or privacy services provided by your registrar.
  • You must not be exposed to false advertising or fraudulent activity by your registrar or any proxy or privacy services provided by your registrar. This includes fraudulent notices, hidden charges, and any activity that is illegal under the consumer protection laws of your place of residence.
Obligations of domain name holders:
  1. You must comply with the terms and conditions posted by your registrar, including the relevant policies of your registrar, registry and ICANN.
  2. You should review your registrar’s current registration agreement as well as any updates.
  3. You are solely responsible for the registration and use of your domain name.
  4. You must provide accurate information for publication in directories such as WHOIS and update it in a timely manner to reflect any changes.
  5. You must respond to requests from your Registrar within fifteen (15) days and keep your Registrar account information up to date. If you choose to update your domain name registration automatically, you must also keep your billing information up to date.
