Setting up SFTP connection in Total Commander

Total Commander does not have native SFTP support. The connection is made using a special plugin.

  1. Download archive with "SFTP" plugin from the official website of Total Commander by the link https://www.totalcommander.ch/win/fs/sftpplug.zip and extract it.
  2. In main menu of Total Commander, open "Configuration → Options":
  3. In section "Plugins" next to "File system plugins (.WFX)", click "Configure":
  4. Click "Add":
  5. Select the plugin file corresponding to your version of Total Commander (32 or 64 bit).
  6. Click "OK":

Before connecting

Make sure the following requirements are met:
  • The IP address from which the connection will be made has been added to the allowed list in security settings of SSH.
  • At least 15 minutes have passed since the IP address was added to the allowed list.
  1. From the drive selection menu, select "Network Neighborhood":
  2. Select "Secure FTP":
  3. In the list of connections, press F7:
  4. Specify an any name for the new connection and click "OK":
  5. Specify connection settings and click "OK":


    To connect by keys to a hosting account, you must have binded your SSH key.

    • "Connect to" - specify host from data for connect over SSH.
    • "User name" - specify login from data for connect over SSH.
    • "Public key file (*.pub)" - select file of public key.
    • "Private key file (*.pem)" - select file of private key.
    • "Encoding (codepage) of file names" - select "UTF-8".
  6. Select the created connection and click Enter:
  7. When connecting for the first time, in the window prompting you to check your fingerprint, click "Yes":

After a successful connection, you will be taken to the root of the file system on the server. To get to the root directory of your hosting account, go to the directory home and further to the directory with the name of the hosting account.

Click "Disconnect":
