Data safety FAQ
Attention!
Regardless of the situation, we recommend that you always create and download backups to your device.Backups
How often are automatic backups created, and where are they stored?
It depends on the service:
- Hosting — backups are created daily and stored in Ukraine. A maintenance backup is also created once a week on servers in Germany.
- Mail — a maintenance backup is created every 2 hours on servers in Germany.
- VPS — backups are created every 4 days and stored in Ukraine.
- Dedicated — not created by the hosting provider; the server owner must set them up on their own.
- Storages — a maintenance backup is created once a week on servers in Germany.
- Cloud services:
- MySQL, ClickHouse, Manticore Search — are created on a scheduled basis and stored in Ukraine.
- PostgreSQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, OpenSearch — created daily and stored in Ukraine.
Is it necessary to create manual backups?
Yes. Automatic hosting backups do not guarantee 100% data safety, especially in the event of a major failure. Always keep backups of important data on your device or another independent storage medium.
How do I create and download manual backups?
It depends on the service:
- Hosting — in the control panel for each hosting account, create and download two backups — account (files without the DB) and all databases in a single archive.
- Mail — in the control panel for each mailbox, submit a request to export and download the archive.
- If you have a large number of mailboxes, you can automate the process using the API, or use mail clients or other apps to download your mail.
- VPS — in the control panel for each server, download its image.
- Dedicated — download the necessary data yourself using any available method.
- Storages — download the contents of each storage via FTP or the web interface.
- Cloud services:
- MySQL — in the control panel for each instance, download a backup of all databases.
- PostgreSQL — in the control panel for each instance, download a backup of all databases.
- Redis — in the control panel, create and download a dump for each instance.
- ClickHouse, RabbitMQ, Manticore Search, OpenSearch — not available for download in the control panel.
Locations
Where is the service data physically stored?
It depends on the service:
- Hosting accounts (files and DB) — in the selected location: Ukraine or other countries.
- Mail (hosting account mail and corporate mail), VPS, Dedicated, storage, cloud services — Ukraine only (migration is not available).
Which country should I choose to move to?
Keep the site's target audience in mind: the farther a visitor is from the selected country, the longer the delay.
Estimated delay for visitors from Ukraine:
- Poland — 15 ms.
- Germany — 40 ms.
- USA — 122–199 ms (depending on the coast).
- Singapore — 200 ms.
- Australia — 300 ms.
The difference between Poland and Germany may be small, but for APIs that are sensitive to latency, even 40 ms can be critical.
If the main goal is to reduce dependence on Ukrainian infrastructure, any location abroad would be suitable.
Is migration a paid service? Are foreign servers more expensive?
No. The migration is free, and the foreign hosting location does not affect the cost.
How do I start migrating my hosting account?
In the control panel, select a different country and wait for the migration to complete.
Does the IP address change during migration?
Yes, the hosting account is being moved to a server with a different IP address.
After migration, do I need to update the IP addresses in the domain's DNS records?
For domains on our name servers, address records are usually updated automatically; for domains on third-party name servers, they must be updated manually.
Regardless of the NS, we recommend checking the DNS records and updating them immediately after migration, if necessary. Otherwise, the domain may continue to point to servers in Ukraine that redirect traffic to the new location, which diminishes the practical value of the migration in terms of stability.
What should I do if I have a dedicated IP that I've ordered?
Migration is not available if you have a dedicated IP. These IP addresses are tied to a specific location and are only accessible in Ukraine. To migrate, you will need to cancel them and point the domain to a shared IP.
How long does the migration take?
It depends on the total number of requests in the queue and the volume of data. It usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. In rare cases, when there are a large number of requests, it may take longer.
Will the sites be accessible during the migration?
It depends on the selected operating mode for sites during DB migration between servers.
Will sites in foreign locations continue to function in the event of major problems?
Yes. Foreign platforms are not directly dependent on infrastructure in Ukraine.
Is it possible to cancel a migration that has already started?
As long as the migration is still in the queue and hasn't started yet, simply click the cancel button. Once the migration has started, it cannot be canceled. In that case, you'll need to wait for it to finish and then change the country again.
Is it possible to return to Ukraine from a foreign location?
Yes. The migration process is the same for all routes.
Infrastructure
Do power outages affect the operation of services?
The infrastructure is designed for long-term operation using off-grid power sources. Routine scheduled outages and prolonged emergency outages should not affect service operations.
Is there full redundancy for all services overseas?
No. There is no comprehensive overseas infrastructure available for the rapid deployment of all services. Even when using an overseas location, we recommend downloading backups.
Will the control panel continue to function in the event of a major accident in Ukraine?
Data from the control panel is replicated with a slight delay. In the event of a major failure, the availability of the control panel is not guaranteed, but its operation should be restored promptly.
What would happen to domains and DNS in the event of a major disaster in Ukraine?
The DNS/NS servers are located overseas and are not directly dependent on infrastructure in Ukraine.
Is it possible to know in advance when services will be restored following a major outage in Ukraine?
Unfortunately, no. The timeframe depends on a variety of factors: the nature and extent of the damage, the availability of electricity and communications, work safety, logistics, and the condition of the infrastructure. Therefore, it is impossible to estimate it even roughly. The main practical safeguard is to create and download your own backups of important data.
